about

Nathan and I wrote this song remotely in 2020, about 6 months into the COVID-19 pandemic. I was 21-years-old (and 10 months) trying to discern between 2 battling crises: a typical, unstable early 20s identity & constant global emergencies.

How do we determine what is pressing and what is trivial...personal and global? What does transitioning into adulthood look like when the world is sideways and backwards? What does growing up is distrust and isolation look like? Where is the time to answer any of this when a pandemic that was supposed to last 2 weeks has no visible end in sight? How do we make sense of it all when we can't even be close to the people we want to?

And

How do we fix it?

This song is catchy, angsty, disappointed, confused, pissed off, a little satirical, trying to help, desperate, funny, figuring it out, hopeful and discouragingly sensitive. It's doing its best to keep going despite the daily apathy and hopelessness that is ever so tempting.

lyrics

Ten plates and a spoon with no handle
Corduroy pants and a mouth full of Advil
21 years and 10 months after
All our food was handed by strangers
And I can't choose between dickies or wranglers
There's so much to love but all I feel is anger
21 years and 10 months after
Thinking-of-you texts and a mouth full of laughter
Next year comes and they go by faster
21 years and I still hate money
Only on credit cards just because it's funny
All of it's confusing, the nihilists they bore me

One more day the rent is late but I'm not gonna pay 'em
Nothing to eat but what you can feed your ego
Your ego
Your ego
You're right
Your ego
Oh, leave me alone
Alright

Buy a car as long as you're the fastest
Cuff our jeans and sleeves we'll pretend to be pragmatic
In my pocket square there's a single tab of acid
Date night looks like sex and filing taxes
21 years and 10 months after
I'd end this pandemic if it meant I'd see you faster
I'd love to come and visit but the roads are looking backwards
I can bring the cards and you can bring the last word
